Important Deadline: October 14, 2025

On this date, Microsoft will officially stop supporting Windows 10. That means no more free security updates, no more bug fixes, and no more technical support.

Your computer will still turn on and work after the deadline—but it won’t be protected. Think of it like driving a car that never gets its brakes serviced. It might work fine at first, but over time the risks become much greater.

Why This Matters for Business Owners

If you’re running a business, this change impacts more than just your office PCs. Here’s why upgrading is critical:

1. Security Risks

After October 14, hackers will see Windows 10 as an easy target. Without Microsoft releasing security patches, cybercriminals can exploit weaknesses in the system—and those vulnerabilities will never be fixed.

  • That could mean stolen client data, ransomware attacks, or downtime that grinds your business to a halt.
  • For small businesses, even one incident can be devastating financially and reputationally.

2. Software Compatibility

Business software evolves quickly. Once Windows 10 is no longer supported, many programs (including accounting software, CRM systems, and even web browsers) may stop working properly.

  • You could see slower performance, frequent crashes, or apps refusing to run at all.
  • Over time, you’ll be locked out of the tools you rely on daily.

3. Compliance Concerns

If you handle sensitive data (like financial records, tax information, or client details), running an unsupported system could put you out of compliance with regulations like the FTC Safeguards Rule, HIPAA, or insurance requirements.

  • Compliance failures often come with steep fines and lost trust from customers.
  • Regulators view outdated operating systems as a serious security lapse.

What Are Your Options?

Microsoft recommends upgrading before the October deadline—but not every PC running Windows 10 can handle Windows 11. If your device doesn’t meet the hardware requirements, you’ll see an error message when you try to upgrade.

If that happens, here are your choices:

  • Buy a new PC: Newer computers are built with Windows 11 in mind and will keep your business secure long term.
  • Sign up for Extended Security Updates (ESU): This gives you one more year of protection while you plan your upgrade.
  • Switch to Linux: This is a possible alternative, but it’s usually only practical for businesses with strong in-house IT teams.
  • Do nothing: This leaves your business exposed—and we strongly advise against it.

💡 Pro tip: Whatever option you choose, back up your important files before making changes. That way, if something goes wrong, your data is safe.

Extended Support for Windows 10

If you’re not ready to move to Windows 11 right away, Extended Security Updates (ESU) give you a temporary safety net. But remember: this is a short-term solution, not a permanent fix.

  • ESU will only be available for one year after October 14, 2025.
  • The cost is $30 per device or 1,000 Microsoft Reward points.
  • Microsoft also offers a free option if you enable Windows Backup to sync files to OneDrive—but keep in mind, you only get 5 GB of free storage. If your business data is larger, you’ll need to pay for more space.

👉 Don’t wait until the last minute. You must register for ESU before the October deadline, or you’ll lose the chance entirely.

Navigating This Transition

The end of Windows 10 support is not just an IT issue—it’s a business risk. The decisions you make now will affect your operations, security, and compliance for years to come.

The best move is to talk with your IT provider as soon as possible. An experienced IT team can:

  • Assess which devices can be upgraded and which need replacing
  • Help back up and migrate your files safely
  • Minimize downtime so your business stays productive
  • Ensure compliance with data protection rules

Take the Next Step

Don’t wait until October 2025 to figure this out. The longer you put it off, the more rushed—and costly—the transition will be.
